When kidney function is compromised, whether acutely or chronically, dialysis is indicated as a means of preventing kidney disease.   <\/span><b>renal replacement therapy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hemodialysis is a method in which the patient&#8217;s blood is pumped into a machine that filters it through a semi-permeable membrane. In this process, excess substances in the blood, such as urea, creatinine, potassium, sodium and other metabolic waste products, are removed. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For this exchange to take place safely, a liquid called <\/span><b>dialysate<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This water is based on ultra-purified water. It consists of: <\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultra-purified water<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Salts and electrolytes (sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium and chloride)<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bicarbonate<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glucose<br><br><\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These components are adjusted to specific concentrations for each patient, ensuring the right balance during treatment. On average,   <\/span><b>each hemodialysis session consumes around 120 liters of treated water<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which underlines the importance of strict quality control.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-da4699a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"da4699a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2><b>Stages of water treatment for hemodialysis<\/b><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The water used in hemodialysis services generally comes from the public network or underground wells. However, this water does not naturally meet the standards required for use in dialysis, and a specific treatment system is needed. <\/span><\/p><h3><b>1. Water pre-treatment<\/b><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The aim of pre-treatment is to remove contaminants that could compromise patient safety and damage subsequent treatment systems, such as reverse osmosis.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The main steps include:<\/span><\/p><ul><li aria-level=\"1\"><h4><b>Deionizers<\/b><\/h4><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Responsible for removing salts and particles in suspension, protecting the membranes of the reverse osmosis system.<\/span><\/p><ul><li aria-level=\"1\"><h4><a href=\"https:\/\/grupoep.com.br\/products\/systems\/water-demineralization\/slowdown\/?lang=en\"><b>Slowdowns<\/b><\/a><\/h4><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They use resins with an affinity for calcium and magnesium, removing the hardness from the water and replacing these ions with sodium, which is then eliminated in reverse osmosis.<\/span><\/p><ul><li aria-level=\"1\"><h4><a href=\"https:\/\/grupoep.com.br\/products\/filter-elements\/filters\/activated-carbon-filter\/?lang=en\"><b>Activated carbon filters<\/b><\/a><\/h4><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Essential for removing chlorine, chloramines and organic compounds. Strict control of these filters is essential, as activated carbon can encourage bacterial proliferation if not properly maintained. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The presence of chlorine or chloramines in the dialysate can cause <\/span><b>hemolysis<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a serious condition characterized by the destruction of red blood cells.<\/span><\/p><h3><a href=\"https:\/\/grupoep.com.br\/products\/systems\/reverse-osmosis\/?lang=en\"><b>2. Reverse osmosis<\/b><\/a><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After pre-treatment, the water goes to the <\/span><b>reverse osmosis<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">considered the heart of water treatment for hemodialysis.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this process, a pressure higher than the osmotic pressure is applied, forcing the water through a <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/grupoep.com.br\/products\/filter-elements\/reverse-osmosis-membrane\/?lang=en\">semi-permeable membrane<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This membrane is capable of retaining  <\/span><b>more than 95% of chemical and microbiological contaminants<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">including heavy metals, bacteria and endotoxins.<\/span><\/p><h3><b>3. These tanks must <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Made from compatible materials<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conical bottom<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allow proper cleaning and disinfection<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does not interfere with the physical-chemical and microbiological quality of the water\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The entire storage and distribution system must meet the requirements of <\/span><b>RDC no. 11\/2014<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ensuring that the water maintains its quality right up to the point of use.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-34304bc elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"34304bc\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/grupoep.com.br\/services\/environmental-testing\/?lang=en\"><b>Monitoring the quality of hemodialysis water<\/b><\/a><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even with an efficient treatment system, constant <\/span><b>constant monitoring<\/b> <b>is indispensable<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
