However, this progress has also resulted in a significant increase in   <\/span><b>waste generation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">many of which have the potential to cause serious damage to human health and the environment.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this context, the <\/span><b>waste classification<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> becomes an essential tool for guaranteeing the correct and safe disposal of these materials.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e5d34fa elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e5d34fa\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2><b>The Importance of Waste Classification in Modern Industry<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the intensification of industrial processes, waste production has become a central concern in sustainability policies. Much of this waste contains hazardous substances which, if disposed of improperly, can contaminate the soil, water and air. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is why <\/span><b>correct classification of waste<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is essential in order to identify the risks involved and adopt appropriate measures for handling, transportation, storage, treatment and final disposal.<br><br><\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h2><b>The First Brazilian Waste Classification Standard: ABNT NBR 10004 (1987)<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brazil took an important step in 1987 with the publication of the <\/span><b>standard ABNT NBR 10004<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which established technical criteria for <\/span><b>classification of solid waste<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This initiative came about in the same year as the UN report &#8220;Our Common Future&#8221;, which highlighted the environmental impacts of unsustainable consumption and production models.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The original standard defined a methodology based on three types of analysis:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Gross mass<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Evaluation of the waste in its current state.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Leaching<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Simulation of the effects of time and water on the material.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Solubilization<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Applicable to solid waste, it assesses the potential for mixing with the water present in the environment.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Based on these analyses, the waste was classified as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Class I &#8211; Hazardous<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Class II &#8211; Non-inert<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b><b>Class III &#8211; Inert<br><br><\/b><\/b>\n<p><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><b>Updating Waste Classification with NBR 10004:2004<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the evolution of the industry and the greater complexity of the waste generated, an update was necessary. Thus, in 2004, the new version of the   <\/span><b>NBR 10004<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which redefined the system of <\/span><b>waste classification<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> into two major classes:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Class I &#8211; Hazardous<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Class II &#8211; Non-hazardous<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (divided into inert and non-inert)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This revision expanded the list of hazardous substances and centralized hazardousness analysis in standard NBR 10005 (Leachate Analysis). Although more technical, this approach still had limitations in the face of global requirements and the complexity of modern waste. <br><br><\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h2><b>The Revolution in Waste Classification: NBR 10004:2024<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2024, the <\/span><b>waste classification in Brazil<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> underwent a profound and strategic change with the new <\/span><b>NBR 10004:2024<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in line with international best practices and updated Brazilian environmental legislation.<br><br><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>The main changes include:<\/b><\/h3>\n<h4><b>1. New Classification System<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The previous model has given way to a more objective classification:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>RP &#8211; Hazardous Waste<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>RNP &#8211; Non-Hazardous Waste<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This approach aims to facilitate technical interpretation and practical application in waste management processes.<br><br><\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>2. Division of the Standard into Two Parts<\/b><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Part 1<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Defines the <\/span><b>technical requirements and criteria<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the <\/span><b>classification of waste<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (how to classify).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Part 2<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Introduces the <\/span><b>SGCR (General Waste Classification System)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a database that guides primary classification based on technical and scientific criteria.<br><br><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><b>3. Inclusion of parameters such as SOPs and GHS<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The new standard requires the identification of <\/span><b>POPs (Persistent Organic Pollutants)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PFAS<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Organophosphate and organochlorine pesticides<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PCBs<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The toxicity of waste now takes into account the criteria of the <\/span><b>GHS (Globally Harmonized System)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an international standard established by the UN for the classification of hazardous chemical substances.<br><br><\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h2><b>Transition and Deadline for Adaptation<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To ensure the effectiveness of the new standard, ABNT has established a transition period:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><b>mandatory validity of NBR 10004:2024<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> begins on <\/span><b>01\/01\/2027<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Until <\/span><b>31\/12\/2026<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the use of the previous version (2004) will still be permitted.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike previous transitions, the new standard required a longer adaptation period, given the complexity and scope of the changes.<br><br><\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h2><b>Mandatory Steps in the New Waste Classification<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to the technical update, NBR 10004:2024 establishes mandatory steps for the <\/span><b>waste classification<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with emphasis on:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Preparation of <\/span><b>Waste Classification Report (LCR)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Identifying the origin of the material<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SOP evaluation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indication of the type of waste (RP or RNP)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use of <\/span><b>Annex A of the SGCR<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which provides guidance on the <\/span><b>need for laboratory analysis<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to accurately determine the class of the waste.<br><br><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<p><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Why is the New Waste Classification a Breakthrough?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The new approach to <\/span><b>waste classification<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">established by <\/span><b>NBR 10004:2024<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This represents an important development for environmental management in Brazil. Among the main benefits are: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A more <\/span><b>clearer and more objective<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greater <\/span><b>alignment with international standards<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emphasis on <\/span><b>laboratory data and actual toxicity<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inclusion of <\/span><b>critical environmental safety parameters<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Promoting <\/span><b>shared responsibility<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> between generators, managers, laboratories and environmental agencies<br><br><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<p><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Conclusion<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The update of NBR 10004:2024 marks a new chapter in the <\/span><b>waste classification<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">  in Brazil.
